Anthraquinone glycosides, known as aloin, act as a tonic for the digestive system. At higher doses, the compound becomes a strong purgative (Indian Medicinal Plants—An Illustrated Dictionary, C.P.Khare. 45. 2007). Topically applied, the juice of Barbados Aloe has potent anti-bacterial, antiseptic and antifungal properties, which are beneficial in treating skin wounds, allergies and insect bites. Shigru – Drumstick (Moringa oleifera) Drumstick is an exceptionally nutritious vegetable tree with a variety of potential uses. The leaves are rich, natural sources of vitamins and minerals. The leaves are a rich source of vitamins A and C, calcium and iron. The leaves also contain sulphur and the amino acids methionine and cystine. A compound found in the flowers and roots of Drumstick, pterygospermin, has powerful antibiotic and fungicidal effects. Because of its high calcium content, Drumstick strengthens bones. These sulphur compounds and flavonoids possess antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, antihyperlipidaemic properties among many others. Shatavari – Asparagus racemosa Its principal constituents include saponins, alkaloids, proteins and tannins.
